Fashion January 12 - 16

Let's try again this week and hopefully I get a chance to see you!

We will continue to sew on our final evaluation projects,work on the written component and your designer assignment should be well underway as you had time to work on it during the 4 snow days!

We will discuss the due dates tomorrow as things have changed in light of not getting to school for 4 days last week to sew

Another Snow Day

I hope you are warm and safe.  As I look out the window I see nothing but blowing snow.  Today you will need to start working on your fashion designer project if you have not done so already.  The rest of our class time will likely be spent sewing and finishing up your PJ pants.  The assignment instruction page is below in Monday's post and I will publish it on Showbie as well.  Remember you can access showbie from your mobile device or desktop at showbie.com

SNOW DAY MONDAY

This really is a HAPPY NEW YEAR from the weather people.

Here is a copy of your designer project so you can work on it at home today

HNC 30 Fashion Designer Assignment

YOU WILL WORK ON THIS PROJECT WHEN YOU ARE WAITING FOR A SEWING MACHINE - OR HELP FROM ME - OR WHENYOU FINISH SEWING

  1. Choose a designer from the lists in your text book - chapter 4 and sign the master list on the front board in the classroom. One designer per person please with no repeats.
  2. Use the iPad to research your designer – DO NOT JUST CUT AND PASTE!!! Take the information you find – organize it and paraphrase it into your own words.
  3. Keep track of the websites you visit and use (WRITE THEM DOWN) – you will need this for a references page.

  1. You will be creating a keynote presentation and each slide will contain a different aspect about your designer. (Note that some information will be in the past tense if you designer has passed away)

INFO : Who: personal information, where is/was he (she) from? Where does he live? When was he born etc.

What: What does she design? For what is she known? What celebrities
wear her clothes?
Where: Where does he work? Where can you purchase his clothing? If he has passed away or retired does someone else design under his name?
When: When did she graduate? When did she get started? When did she really become known?
Interesting Information: awards won, other products that this designer endorses
or Gives her name to, interesting stories and info.
Pictures: Throughout please include pictures of designs, products (eg perfume)
References: Include a separate “references” slide – The title “references” goes in the middle of the page and each website you used for information must be listed on the sheet. Try to find an author for each site (scroll down to the bottom – it is often listed there) as well as a year and write each entry according to the following APA format:

Fashion Jan 5 - 9

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope you had a fabulous Christmas and I wish you all the best in 2015.
This week we are focusing on getting our sewing projects finished.  We will pick up where we left off before Christmas.  If you are done - remember there is a written component to your sewing project that you must complete as well. And.....you have a fashion designer project to be working on too.  There is lots to do :)

Fashion Dec 15 - 19

Last week until Christmas.....

Monday - reminder that you need to have your fabric and supplies at school today.  PLEASE PREWASH - we will start talking about patterns and symbols and will hopefully pin and even cut out

Tuesday - Test on textiles - this is everything we did last week.....fibre characteristics, natural and synthetic fibres, yarns, fabric construction and laundry symbols

Wednesday - Friday.....Sewing

TEST INFO:

The test is out of 56 marks

Knowledge and Understanding  = 20 marks....10 M/C, 10 True false
Application = 13 marks,  Laundry symbols and identifying fabric
Thinking = 17 marks...filling in a chart on fibres
Communication = 6 marks...vocabulary (choose 3 terms to define)

Your final evaluation covers major concepts learned during the course. There are TWO parts that must be completed and together they account for 15% of your final mark. The final exam counts for the other 15%

PART 1 SEWING SKILLS: Completion of a garment

    Using the sewing skills you learned throughout the year you will construct a garment. We will all be sewing sleep pants (PJs),
    You are responsible for purchasing: save the receipt
  • a pattern
  • material - please choose a woven cotton material NO KNITS AND
    NO SLIPPERY FABRIC
  • elastic - half inch size
  • thread
  • You need to have everything at school by ____________________

Please prewash and iron your fabric

If you are not able to purchase supplies You may speak with Mrs Smith and she can provide you with $$ to purchase materials


PART 2 WRITTEN COMPONENT

For this portion of the evaluation you should use your notes to help you answer the questions. Please write in complete sentences and explain your answer fully. One word answers are not sufficient.

a) Choose 2 elements of design and 2 principles of design to define and explain how they contribute to your garment
    b) How does your garment express your personality?
    c) What is the total cost of your garment. Include the cost of the fabric, pattern, thread and elastic. Is your garment cheaper to sew or purchase ready made? What are the advantages and disadvantages of sewing your own garment?

d) What is the fibre content of your garment? How will you care for it? Design an appropriate care label for this garment
