WELCOME BACK!!

Welcome back to an exciting 2016-2017 school year at CHSS.  This blog will provide some information for you....course info sheets and information about me.....but the current and up to date information for all my classes will be shared through edmodo.  We will take the time during our first day together to sign in to my edmodo classroom and there you will also find course information sheets and everything you will need for a successful semester.  If you would like to join one of my edmodo classes please email me for the code  lynne.godkin@ed.amdsb.ca

Gerontology May 25 - 29

Here is a quick look at the upcoming week As always it is subject to change

Monday - I am away at the Board office today and you are scheduled to have an assembly for grade 11 and 12s from 2:10 - 3:10.  I want you to think about how the topic in the assembly can be applied to Senior Citizens. If something happens and there is no assembly then you will be working on your final evaluation.

Tuesday - More time to work on your final evaluation projects.  Remember that 4 of you have expressed an interest in attending the Alzheimer Society Volunteer presentation tonight at the Betty Cardno Centre.  This will count as your self directed final evaluation project if you write a reflection on the evening.

Wednesday - Huronview Day - PLEASE make every effort to attend.  Some of you have missed Huronview quite a few times and you disappoint a senior when you do that.

Thursday - Caring for a senior- the role of a PSW and family caregivers

Friday - I am away at OFSSAA West Regionals for Track and Field - you will be working on your final evaluation projects.  They are due Monday June 15.  This is a FIRM Deadline

HSP 3U May 25 - 29

Here is a quick look at the upcoming week - as always it is subject to change
Monday - I am at the Board office all day, you will be watching the remainder of the movie Nell. Mrs Greidanus is scheduled to be your teacher - she will have the movie assignment for you. Please hand it in on Wednesday of this week

Tuesday - Discussion of abnormal behaviour and finish the movie if necessary. Review of agents of socialization, In particular we will focus in on the family and attachment - we will look at Harry Harlow's experiments

Wednesday - Today's focus is on groups and social behaviour

Thursday - Conformity, Obedience, Stanley Milgram's experiments

Friday - I am away today at OFSSAA West Regional Track and Field, you will have the period today to work on your final evaluation project - reminder it is due Friday June 12

    Details of Tuesday's test

    Knowledge and Understanding = 12 marks, 12 multiple choice
    Application = 14 marks, 8 matching and 6 fill in the blank
    Thinking = 12 marks, short answer question plus a diagram of the brain
    Communication = 12 marks, short answer questions (2,2,4,4)

    Total = 50 marks

    Review Alzheimer disease, diabetes, health issues (depression, osteoporosis, arthritis, deafness, eye issues), theories of ageing, the brain, physical changes with ageing

    Gerontology April 20 - 25

    Here is a look at the upcoming week - a short one with the Pd Day on Friday

    Monday - 5 mores conferences with me about your health issues presentation, the rest of you need to make sure you have your one page handout done as well as your Huronview relfection. Then start thinking about your final project and what you would like it to look like.

    Tuesday - Huronview

    Thursday - Caring for elderly relatives/long term care home residents

    Friday - PD Day

    HSP 3U April 20 - 14

    Here is a look at our upcoming week - it is a short one with the PD DAy on Friday
    Monday = Learning and Personality - the test ends here
    Tuesday = Perception and Memory
    Wednesday = Stress
    Thursday = test
    Next week = Mental Illness

    TEST INFO: It is out of 45 marks
    Knowledge and Understanding = 10 marks, 10 multiple choice
    Application = 10 marks, Matching (6 marks) short answer 4 marks
    Thinking and Inquiry = 9 marks, label a diagram (4 marks), two short answer questions (3 marks, 2 marks)
    Communication = 16 marks, vocabulary (8 marks) longer answer (8 marks)

    You need to focus on everything in the psychology unit, until the end of learning.  Know the psychologists you took notes on and I summarized in the chart handout, study the brain notes and diagrams and notes on learning (conditioning, - classical and operant, observational, and learning styles)
    Everything you need to know is in your notes and posted on Edmodo, it would be wise to rewatch the videos that are listed in the presentations.

    Gerontology April 13-17

    Here is a look at the upcoming week

    Monday - you will be writing last Wednesday's test if you have not done that - there are 3 of you. Then you will be starting the Health Issues for the Elderly project.  Everyone is working individually on this - the information is posted on Edmodo.  If you have already written the test - you will be continuing with the project.  Conferences/presentations begin on Wednesday

    Tuesday - Huronview

    Wednesday - Conferences/presentations for the health issues project begin.  Everyone will be sharing their information individually with me and then we will consolidate together when we are done.

    Thursday/Friday - theories of aging

    Here is a look at the upcoming week:
    Monday - I am at the Board office and you will have a supply - you will be completing the psychology theorist write ups we started on Friday and then your work is posted on edmodo. You will also be spending some time on NeuroNation brain training
    Tuesday - Finish up from yesterday if necessary, review and do another brain training session

    Reminder of Wednesday's test.  With Easter Monday tomorrow it is the perfect opportunity to study - everything on the test can be found on edmodo...in the nutrition folder.  Here are test details - it is a longer test and an important one - be sure to study!

    Knowledge and Understanding - 21 marks....21 multiple choice questions
    Application - 14 marks - 10 marks matching and 4 marks short answer questions
    Thinking - 16 marks - 6 marks short answer question (3 questions x 2 marks each) and 10 mark question on healthy eating (you will be looking up information in nutrition charts and using what you find)
    Communication - 7 marks....a question worth 4 marks and a question worth 3 marks

    Be sure to review the nutrition notes on the 6 nutrients - (protein, water, vitamins, minerals, carbs and fats)
    Review the notes you took while watching the "Fed Up"  Sugar documentary
    Review the presentation by Jenessa Dalton on nutrition and seniors
    Review the notes from the video we watched on the 12 unhealthy habits  - Gillian the Dietitian

    HSP Test Information

    Results of class vote yesterday = Test on Tuesday April 7 It will be a week A so I see you in the afternoon

    Test info: Test will cover the entire anthropology unit - all info is posted in the anthro folder

    Knowledge and Understanding = 16 marks, (10 M/C and 6 marks short answer)

    Application = 18 marks (10 matching and a question worth 8 marks - choose 4 items from the list and explain their significance to anthropology)

    Thinking/Communication = (18 marks) The Theme is "Who Are You" - Two longer answer questions - one is 10 marks and one is 8 marks....there is some choice within the questions.

    I hope you had a great weekend.  Here is a quick look at the upcoming week...tentative as always.

    Monday - We will bet back on track with reading "Still Alice" and then start presentations on superfoods.  Chelsey and Kristy you still need to share your research project

    Wednesday - finish up presentations if necessary and wind up the nutrition unit

    Thursday - possible day for a test....the other potential day is Wednesday of next week - April 8

    HSP 3U March 9 - 13

    Last week before March BREAK

    Monday and Tuesday - Make wise use of your time - work on your media stereotypes assignments...the group presentation and your individual reflection.

    Wednesday/Thursday....presentations - we will draw numbers to see who goes first.

    Friday - Finish up presentations if necessary and begin the physical anthropology unit

    After March Break we will spend 1.5 - 2 weeks looking at physical anthropology and then have a Unit test before moving on to psychology

    Gerontology March 9 - 13

    Here is a look at the week - last one before March Break!

    Monday - we will start a new Unit - Nutrition...today we will talk about the 6 major nutrients and look at Protein and Carbs in more depth. Then we will start a documentary "Fed Up" that looks at the Number one health problem in North America.  Remember...what you eat now.... will affect your life as a senior!

    Tuesday - Our first day with our partners at Huronview!  Be on time with your coats

    Wednesday - continue watching "Fed Up" and take up the discussion questions, Look at the nutrients Fat and Water if we have time

    Thursday - Continue with nutrients - Vitamins and Minerals

    Friday - Healthy Eating video/ worksheet and discussion around fats

    MARCH BREAK

    Be sure to be in school and on time on Monday March 23 the first day back as Jenessa Dalton is coming to talk to us about being a registered dietician and working with gerontology clients.  She is now working at Huronview and will have you doing a swallowing assessment, taste testing foods for the elderly and you will also get a chance to practice feeding each other.

    This week we will focus on Cultural and Physical anthropology

    Monday - class discussion, finish working in the expert groups from last day and then switch into new groups to share what you have learned.

    Tuesday - quickly finish up your "new" group discussion and look at a case study, schools of thought in anthropology and Margaret Mead

    Wednesday - Physical anthropology

    Thursday/Friday...perhaps the National Geographic video on our ancestors...it depends on how Monday - Wednesday progresses

    Monday - I am away at the Board office.  There are 3 or 4 of you who need write Friday's test yet and many who need to hand in the movie review from a week and a half ago. Today you will be looking at your profile on MY Blueprint

    Tuesday - I am not sure if we will go to Huronview today or not. - It depends if the outbreak is over or not...otherwise we are starting to look at the inquiry process and will continue for the remainder of the week

    Here is a look at the upcoming week:

    Monday - I am away at the Board Office - you will get started on answering the question what makes us human by looking at anthropology and Canadian Culture

    Tuesday - Inquiry project presentations -

    Wednesday - finish up inquiry presentations if necessary and then get back to anthropology - starting with cultural anthropology

    Thursday - Friday ...we need a quiz on the inquiry process and the intro to anthro, psychology and sociology ...one of these two days

    Review CPR notes that you took with Miss Carter
    Review germs and hand washing - how to do it properly and when should you hand wash (hint...after using the washroom, if you sneeze into your hand etc)
    Be able to tell time with he 24 hour clock
    Ensure you can label the human skeleton

    Gerontology

    Hi there and welcome to week 2.  Here is a look at what is on the schedule this week

    Monday - finish up "On Golden Pond"  - think about the movie and remember you will be writing a movie review when everyone has seen the entire movie.  Health Concerns for the elderly - germs and hand washing

    Tuesday - Finish health implications...look at medical specialists

    Wednesday - 24 hour clock, blood pressure, heart.....a chance to work on your movie review

    Thursday - skeletal System

    Friday - Movie review due today

    Remember next Monday is Family Day and Tuesday first thing we are heading to Huronview for our tour.

    I was originally scheduled to see you Friday January 30 and here is it February 2nd and I haven't met you yet!

    When we finally get to school this week we will spend the first few days settling in - we need to accomplish the following:

    -get to know each other
    -check out course info sheets, learn about the upcoming semester
    - sign in to EDMODO
    -sign up for Remind
    -create accounts in Showbie and Skaffl
    -get into the first assignment....I have it ready to go already

    Another Snow Day

    SNOW DAY MONDAY

    This really is a HAPPY NEW YEAR from the weather people.

    Here is a copy of your designer project so you can work on it at home today

    HNC 30 Fashion Designer Assignment

    YOU WILL WORK ON THIS PROJECT WHEN YOU ARE WAITING FOR A SEWING MACHINE - OR HELP FROM ME - OR WHENYOU FINISH SEWING

    1. Choose a designer from the lists in your text book - chapter 4 and sign the master list on the front board in the classroom. One designer per person please with no repeats.
    2. Use the iPad to research your designer – DO NOT JUST CUT AND PASTE!!! Take the information you find – organize it and paraphrase it into your own words.
    3. Keep track of the websites you visit and use (WRITE THEM DOWN) – you will need this for a references page.

    1. You will be creating a keynote presentation and each slide will contain a different aspect about your designer. (Note that some information will be in the past tense if you designer has passed away)

    INFO : Who: personal information, where is/was he (she) from? Where does he live? When was he born etc.

    What: What does she design? For what is she known? What celebrities
    wear her clothes?
    Where: Where does he work? Where can you purchase his clothing? If he has passed away or retired does someone else design under his name?
    When: When did she graduate? When did she get started? When did she really become known?
    Interesting Information: awards won, other products that this designer endorses
    or Gives her name to, interesting stories and info.
    Pictures: Throughout please include pictures of designs, products (eg perfume)
    References: Include a separate “references” slide – The title “references” goes in the middle of the page and each website you used for information must be listed on the sheet. Try to find an author for each site (scroll down to the bottom – it is often listed there) as well as a year and write each entry according to the following APA format:

    Fashion Jan 5 - 9

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    I hope you had a fabulous Christmas and I wish you all the best in 2015.
    This week we are focusing on getting our sewing projects finished.  We will pick up where we left off before Christmas.  If you are done - remember there is a written component to your sewing project that you must complete as well. And.....you have a fashion designer project to be working on too.  There is lots to do :)
